WORLDS IN COLLISION: Relearning Worship – Part 2

Worship (or Lack Thereof)
by Brian Groce
I’ve been thinking a lot about worship. I blogged about it not that long ago and the fellas in the three links above are all thinking about it too. This past weekend’s conversation with Eric Herron around the idea of a Missional Worship Artist were formative as well.
But this put me over the edge.
There is a Holy Drama in Liturgy that creates and environment for the Spirit and the People to co-mingle. It is a formative ooze that shapes and molds. It is also the most missional thing you can possibly do. And I’m beginning to think it should happen weekly.
Perhaps that strikes you as …. well “no, duh!” or maybe you think I just lost my House Church membership card. I hope neither.
I try not to be polemic. Usually.
I’m just beginning to wonder if there is a place for a weekly public – read: open to everybody and treated as such – time for gathering as a Larger (bigger than house church or household) Body to WORSHIP. I mean really get down and worship.
I’ve missed that. I’ve missed the passion of the liturgy, the loudness of the drums, the seeing of the many, the raising of hands….
I’m not sure what this may mean for VC or House Churches in general…. but I wonder if it is time to stand up in front of the world – vulnerable and naked in our passionate wonderment of an unseen deity who’s son died and (we say) came back to life. That may be the most missional thing we do all week long. But maybe that’s just me.

Not sure what is up, but I’m very out of it today. Last night too.
We went to a great meeting last night in our neighborhood about how the public school is becoming a neighborhood public montessori school. It was good to start making connections in our new ‘hood.
I wrote this elaborate post about it last night and then promptly lost it.
Then I stayed up to late doing… well… nothing. I tried to upload the audio from this past weekend’s Missional Worship Artist Conversation. But that didn’t work. I tried capturing the audio from a worship session we had Sunday AM – that didn’t work. I stayed up too late, got up late, and feel generally…. un-focused.
It’s weird.
Still confused (yet trying to trust and be faithful) about what God is doing in our midst job-wise. One possibility I had seems less possible, another is interesting, several more seem just beyond reach – and yet none of them may be what God uses.
This has been a desert time. Just when I think it is coming to an end it lengthens…
I suppose that is how a desert is……

This was a wonderful weekend. I don’t even know how to begin to articulate it…. Eric and Neil were here from Thursday to Sunday, great conversation was had, friendships reconnected, new ones formed, new ideas discussed, prayers offered, kingdom come…. It was good. I had a sense that the weekend was important on many levels. I don’t want to speak too soon, I look forward to seeing what develops in the weeks ahead.
The only downer from the weekend was that Sarah and I both got really sick Sunday. She started throwing up in the night and I got sick during the afternoon. Thankfully my parents were here and stayed an extra night to tend to Cloey and us. Unfortunately Cloey is now sick as well…. prayers needed.
Alot of the conversations and worship this weekend was recorded. I plan to get the audio edited and posted later this week.

I don’t know Mark Palmer very well. I hope that can change, btw. But during the several opportunities I’ve had to be around him I have been deeply impressed upon by his spirit. He strikes me as a man of great depth, wisdom, passion, and compassion. I appreciate his astute mind and ready sense of humor.
I remember hearing about him when we still lived in CA – about his wife dying while their son was yet so young. This struck a nerve within me as Sarah and I were expecting Cloey and Sarah’s mom had died of cancer. And now Palmer has been struck with the same.
I don’t know many prayers for healing, this is not an area I have had much experience in – and yet I believe that God can in fact heal. I don’t understand God’s ways, this is beyond me. But I trust that God can heal – he can, and ask the he does, heal Mark Palmer. He’s your servant, Lord. Heal him so he can continue your work in the world. Heal him so Your Kingdom can come on earth as it is in heaven.
From Eric Keck:
++heal palmer,
fight for him,
fight for us
bring him many more years
living here on earth++
Palmer’s Journal

Thanks Alan and Keck for the Prayer Button.

Great post by Alan Hartung. click to read.
“These types of Christians are not talked about very often, because they don’t have any superstars to represent them…. They haven’t heard of THEOOZE or Next Wave, and they certainly don’t know “emergent” refers to an organized group of anything. When someone investigates the emerging church because they are discontent with the establishment, they really don’t get a clear picture of the emerging church from the dominant voices.”
I’ve thought similar thoughts recently, thanks for articulating them Alan.
We should have an “Alan Conference” sometime – Alan Creech, Alan Hartung, and Alan Roxburgh.
